We are delighted to announce a lecture by prof. Paolo Morandi of the EUCENTRE foundation, titled “Seismic assessment and retrofit strategies for URM buildings: current methods and recent research advancements”, which will be held on November 25th, 2024 at 17:15h in the Lecture hall of the temporary location of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb at Kranjčevićeva 2.

The lecture will address current methodologies for assessing the seismic performance of unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings, with a focus on recent research developments.

The goal is to connect theoretical principles with practical applications, offering valuable knowledge for professionals working to reduce the seismic vulnerability of masonry buildings.

The lecture is a part of the postgraduate specialist study in Earthquake Engineering. You can apply on the web page of Professional development program in civil engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb.

16. September 2024.

On September 16th, 2024 PhD candidate Ante Pilipović, employed at the 2BESAFE project, defended his PhD topic proposal titled “Impact of target retrofit solutions on vulnerability models of typical masonry residential buildings.”

The proposed research aims to develop new vulnerability models for the as-built and target retrofitted common building typologies, and determine the impact of target retrofit on single building and urban scale seismic risk assessment in terms of common risk metrics such as loss curves and average annual losses.

18. July 2024.

The 18th World conference in Earthquake Engineering was held from June 30th – July 5th 2024 in Milano, Italy. The majority of the members of the 2BESAFE research group attended the conference and contributed with conference papers related to numerical modelling of structural elements under seismic loads, development of fragility and vulnerability curves of typical buildings, reconstruction campaign and retrofitting measures undertaken after the earthquakes in Croatia in 2020, seismic behaviour of buildings built in row aggregates and seismic risk assessment at urban scale. 

15. March 2024.

2BESAFE project lead assof.prof. Mario Uroš gave an invited lecture at the GNP 2024 conference held in Kolašin, Montenegro. The topic was the reconstruction and recovery after the earthquakes in Croatia in 2020.

Members of the research group Romano Jevtić Rundek and Ante Pilipović also attended the conference.

22. November 2023.

2BESAFE research group members and PhD students Romano Jevtić Rundek and Ante Pilipović, along with postdoctoral researcher and research group member Maja Baniček attended the METIS Workshop on site-specific seismic hazard assessment in Bergamo, Italy, from 14th to 15th November 2023. Organized jointly by the METIS project and the GEM foundation, the workshop focused on PSHA, which is a very important topic for the 2BESAFE project for implementing site-specific hazard for ground motion record selection purposes and development of conditional spectra.

Dr. sc. Ljupko Perić Held a lecture in comparrison of different engineering approaches used for seismic analysis of structures,  on 15.12.2023, in 17h at Sv. Duh 129, Zagreb.

Associate Professor Dimitrios Vamvatsikos will visit Zagreb at the end of November 2023. Prof. Dimitrios will give a lecture on “Earthquakes, accidents, collapses, and three little pigs: How is safety defined in the era of the Eurocodes?” on 28.1 1. 2023, starting at 19:30, in the lecture hall VP at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, Pierottijeva 6, p.p. 390.

Prof. Paolo Bazzuro and his associates will visit Zagreb at the end of January 2023. Prof. Bazzurro will give a lecture on “Development of fragility curves for risk assessment of specific buildings with focus on ground motion selection techniques: dos and don’ts.” on 25. 1. 2023, starting at 10:15, in the lecture hall VP at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb, Kačićeva 26.

Members of the research group attended the 10th ICCSM International Congress of. Croatian Society of Mechanics Pula, Croatia, September 28 – 30, 2022. organised by Croatian Society of Mechanics.

14. September 2022.

3rd European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology was held from 4th – 9th September 2022 in Bucharest, Romania.

Prof. Mario Uroš gave a lecture at the conference on Damage to masonry buildings after Petrinja Mw 6.4 Earthquake in 2020 that shook large parts of central Croatia and caused significant damage to buildings in the area.

6. September 2022.

PhD candidates Romano Jevtić Rundek and Ante Pilipović have presented the work they have done during their first year of doctoral studies at the 8th Doctoral Symposium in Civil Engineering held at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb from 5th – 6th September 2022 as part of their doctoral studies curriculum at the same faculty.

Both works are important milestones in developing the methodology for derivation of fragility and vulnerability curves of typical buildings involved in the 2BESAFE project.

At the international symposium 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆, which will take place in hybrid form on 14. July 2022 in Protugal, Professor 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗨𝗿𝗼𝘀̌ will talk about structural damage to buildings after the 2020 earthquakes that shook large parts of central Croatia.

The project proposal is one of the results of a continuous collaboration between scientists from the Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and the Department of Engineering Mechanics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb.

16. May 2022.

Scientists from the Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and the Department of Engineering Mechanics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Zagreb presented a project proposal for the Zagreb project at the Ministry of Culture and Media.

The annual meeting of the 2BeSafe research group was held on February 22. The meeting was attended by project leader Mario Uroš, researchers Senad Medić, Marta Šavor Novak and Marija Demšić, and project PhD students Ante Pilipović and Romano Jevtić Rundek.

From 8 to 12 December, the team members visited EPFL, where they toured the structural testing laboratories, gave presentations on current research activities and held discussions on possible collaboration.
